Specializing in/Practice limited to representing inmates in the following:

  • Parole suitability hearings and related matters
  • Rescission/En Banc and Parole Reconsideration hearings
  • Youthful Offender Parole Hearings (SB 260 and SB 261)
  • Elder and Third Striker Parole Hearings
  • Non-Violent Parole Hearings and Paper Reviews
  • Commutation of Sentence Petitions to the Governor
  • Compassionate Release Court Hearings and Appeals
  • Habeas Corpus petitions challenging parole denials/governor reversals

Since 2014 nearly 60% of my clients received parole grants at their hearings, and several clients had their writs challenging parole denials granted in court. To date, 240+ of my clients have gone home to their families and friends. Since SB 260 and 261 were enacted, I have handled over 75 Youthful Offender Parole Hearings and many elder parole hearings. Nearly 2/3s of them resulted in grants of parole. These client success stories have happened during a time when the Board has granted parole to less than 25% of inmates, including youthful and elder offenders, who went to hearings.

I primarily represent California inmates, at parole hearings and in related matters, and juvenile LWOPs seeking resentencing to life with the possibility of parole. If you have a family member, friend, or significant other who needs a dedicated lawyer for his or her parole hearing contact me now. My expertise and reputation in this field can mean the difference between your loved one being granted parole and continuing to languish in prison. Many factors come into play at a parole hearing, and the system is still biased against inmates, so there is no guarantee of success for even the strongest parole candidate. But I firmly believe that having me fighting for your loved one gives him or her the best chance to beat the odds and go home.

Parole grant reversed for ‘Gator,’ former skateboard superstar convicted for 1991 rape, murder

SAN DIEGO — The governor has denied parole for a former skateboarding superstar who admitted to the 1991 rape and murder of a model in his Carlsbad condo, a decision that comes more than four months after the inmate was found suitable for release.

In a review explaining the reversal, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Mark Anthony “Gator” Rogowski needs to develop “a deeper understanding” of what led him to ambush Jessica Bergsten, a friend who’d come over to watch a movie.
